AuSPEN Council

AuSPEN Council is voluntary multidisciplinary Council comprising of medical, nursing and allied health from across Australia and New Zealand. Council members are full members of AuSPEN and each chair one of AuSPEN’s subcommittees.


Members of Council are usually appointed by expression of interest and can serve 3-year terms, up to a maximum of 3 terms (9 years).


AuSPEN Council meets at least twice a year and has the following responsibilities:

  • Keep the Society functional and viable
  • To meet the mission and objectives of the Society
  • To uphold the Constitution of the Society
  • To elect the Executive Officers of AuSPEN
  • To appoint an AuSPEN representative to the European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ESPEN)
  • To appoint subcommittees that align with AuSPEN’s strategic plan and determine their terms of reference, duration and composition
  • To maximise membership and provide services and benefits to members
  • To approve or reject applications for AuSPEN membership
  • To maintain a list of all AuSPEN members
  • To improve the profile of clinical nutrition and metabolism
  • To promote good science and nutrition
  • To encourage knowledge enhancement and professional competence in the field of nutritional support
  • Promote an evidence based approach to nutrition in clinical practice
  • Encourage membership involvement in research and its dissemination
  • Provide clinical nutrition expertise in an advisory capacity to government bodies, other nutrition organisations and health professionals
  • Act as an advocate for patients requiring nutritional support
  • Liaison and/or involvement with strategic planning of the Society to ensure continuity and to continue momentum of current and new plans
  • Form strategic alliances to foster and facilitate the above
